Treatment Brief: Assisi Loop

Current research in targeted Pulse Electro Magnetic Fields (tPEMF) is producing new treatment options with promising results for cats and dogs.

“tPEMF, when administered correctly, is a great way to give a senior cat or dog non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical pain relief through the reduction of inflammation,” said Dr. Laurie Brush, founder of Heaven at Home Pet Hospice.

Inflammatory conditions that may benefit from treatment range from osteoarthritis in cats and dogs to chronic kidney failure, allergies, and rhinitis. Similarly, the endorphin-producing technology can be put to use in cases of separation anxiety and other behavioral scenarios where brain inflammation is believed to play a role.

One company that has put the tPEMF research into practice across the country is Assisi, creator of the Assisi Loop, the Assisi Lounge, and the Calmer Canine devices.

How It Works

In each device, loop technology is designed to deliver a signal that targets the body’s own natural anti-inflammatory process. This signal enhances nitric oxide production to help speed the healing of soft and hard tissues – including skin, tendons, ligaments, bones, and organs. The increase in nitric oxide also decreases harmful pro-inflammatory mediators. The net effect is protection from oxidative stress and a reduction in cell death. The signal also causes neural cells to produce “feel good” substances such as serotonin, dopamine and endorphins.

Two double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials in 2018 and 2019 showed that tPEMF therapy reduced the need for opioids by 50% and improved the rate of healing.

Depending on the condition being treated, the Loop can be applied by a visiting veterinarian, at a veterinary clinic, or prescribed for home use.

The Heaven at Home hospice team may use an Assisi loop as part of a multi-modal approach to challenging pain and mobility problems. Multi-modal hospice plans include nutrition supplementation, environmental modification, assistive devices, and therapeutic treatments like laser or tPEMF.

“The Assisi Loop gives us an additional tool to manage the pet’s comfort, which is paramount. Like our cold laser therapy, we’re excited by the results we’re seeing,” Brush said.
