Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most emotional moments you’ll ever walk through. Alongside the grief, there’s often a practical question that arrives quickly: What happens next?
“Many families find comfort in choosing an aftercare option that feels peaceful, respectful, and aligned with the way their pet lived—loved, cherished, and treated gently right to the end,” said Dr. Laurie Brush, founder of Heaven at Home Pet Hospice and Aftercare Center.
The organization was one of the first in Michigan to offer aquamation—also called water-based cremation or alkaline hydrolysis.
Water-based cremation is an increasingly popular option for pet parents who want a soft, natural-feeling process. Instead of using flame, aquamation uses warm water, gentle circulation, and an alkaline solution to mimic what nature does over time, returning the body to its base elements in a way that many families describe as calmer and more comforting.
“It’s often chosen because it feels like a peaceful continuation of a loving goodbye—especially for families who have experienced in-home euthanasia, where the entire goal is comfort, dignity, and as little stress as possible,” Dr. Brush said.
Every family’s reasons are personal, but aquamation is often selected because it is:
- Gentle and respectful – a process that mirrors nature, without intensity or harshness
- Environmentally mindful – gives a lower-impact choice
- Comforting in concept – many people find the idea of a water-based process emotionally easier to hold
- A beautiful fit after home euthanasia – your pet can remain in a calm setting, then be carefully transferred into aftercare with dignity and compassion
What You Receive After Aquamation
Aquamation returns cremated remains (often called ashes), just like other cremation options—so you can still bring your pet home, keep them close, or memorialize them in a meaningful way.
And that’s where the healing can begin.
Memorial Items That Help You Hold Them Close
Keepsakes can become a source of comfort in the weeks and months after loss. Many families appreciate having something tangible to honor the bond they shared, such as:
- A beautiful urn in a range of styles
- A paw print or other impression keepsakes
- A commemorative memorial piece or jewelry that feels personal and lasting
- A photo laser engraving — a truly special way to preserve an image of your pet as a permanent tribute
These items aren’t about “moving on.” They’re about staying connected and honoring your bond. Your pet gave you a lifetime of love. Choosing a gentle aftercare option is one more way to give that love back.
