Gentle, Joyful Ways to Keep Senior Pets Active This Summer

July 2nd, 2026 by Ima Admin

As pets age, their needs change, but their desire to engage, explore, and connect doesn’t. For senior dogs and cats dealing with stiffness, arthritis, or reduced mobility, movement becomes less about intensity and more about intention. The good news? With a little creativity, summer can be a season of renewed comfort, mobility, and joy.

“Research into canine osteoarthritis points towards combining targeted Monoclonal antibody therapy (such as Librela) with physical activity for a synergetic effect,” said Dr. Laurie Brush, founder of Heaven at Home Pet Hospice and member of two national initiatives that advocate for hospice and pain management for senior pets.

“This “movement plus medicine” approach helps maintain muscle, support joints, and improves overall quality of life,” she said.

Rethinking Play for Aging Bodies

Not every dog can chase a ball anymore—but that doesn’t mean play has to stop. It just needs to evolve.

Try swapping high-impact fetch for interactive, low-strain activities:

  • A ball on a rope they can gently tug or nudge
  • KONGs that encourage engagement
  • Knotted ropes that are easier to grip and won’t roll away

These small adaptations keep pets mentally stimulated.

Build Strength with Gentle Tools

Balance and stability tools, like those found in canine fitness lines, can make a big difference. Light use of balance discs, “peanuts,” or inflatable platforms encourages micro-movements that strengthen stabilizing muscles without strain.

Even a few minutes a day can:

  • Improve body awareness (proprioception)
  • Increase rear leg strength, which helps pets get up more easily
  • Reduce pain and stiffness

The key is short, positive sessions—never pushing to fatigue.

Make the Outdoors Accessible Again

Summer is meant to be enjoyed—and with the right support, even limited-mobility pets can take part.

Consider:

  • Pet strollers or carts for longer outings
  • Ramps to help them access sofas, decks, or cars
  • Support harnesses for short walks

And for water-loving pets, a life jacket opens up safe swimming—one of the best low-impact exercises available.

Don’t Underestimate the Power of “Sniff Walks”

Even brief outdoor time can be transformative. Let your pet move slowly, sniff freely, and explore at their own pace. This kind of enrichment supports both physical and emotional wellbeing.

A Season of Connection

Summer is a great time to create memories with your beloved companion, whether it’s a gentle beach visit, a shaded park outing, or simply sitting together outside. With thoughtful adaptations, you can help your senior pet stay active, comfortable, and engaged—making every sunny day count.
