In Memoriam: Chuck Wall

By Spalding & Chip Wall, published on February 18th, 2026
"From the very first phone call, Sonya answered with one of the kindest voices I have ever heard. She gently walked us through the entire process, knowing this was our first time experiencing something like this. She explained what to expect every step of the way, which brought us so much comfort during such a difficult moment. She is truly amazing. When Miss Kim arrived at our home, we immediately felt at ease. Her compassion and kindness toward us — and most of all toward Chuck — were extraordinary. She was so gentle with him, making sure he was comfortable and that we were, too. As we began the process, her warmth and care turned one of the hardest days of our lives into a peaceful and loving memory. That is something we will always remember and be grateful for. Thank you to the entire team for taking such beautiful care of our sweet boy, Chuck. We will never forget your kindness."

We searched for a dog for nearly two years before we found Chuck’s picture online. He was born in Irons, Michigan — a perfect 50/50 mix of Golden Retriever and Standard Poodle. From the moment we met him, we knew he was ours.
We brought him home at just 8½ weeks old. At only eight pounds, he was small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. Chuck was born on Friday, June 13, 2014 — a Friday the 13th under a full Strawberry Moon — and somehow that always felt perfectly fitting for our special boy.
Chuck was truly amazing. Within just two weeks, he had already learned to sit, stay, lie down, and even ring the bells on the sliding door to go outside. He was incredibly smart and eager to please.
At the time, we lived on a lake, where he spent his days running through the woods, chasing anything that moved. Later, when we moved to Grand Rapids, he enjoyed a wonderful yard to play in and long walks — often five miles or more — around Reeds Lake when we lived in East Grand Rapids.
When our grandchildren came along, Chuck showed us yet another side of his gentle spirit. He was always loving and careful, never knocking them over, always watching over them. He was protective, patient, and kind.
He was simply the best.
Sadly, Chuck developed cancer and began having internal complications. Even then, he put on a brave face for us. But we could see it was becoming painful, and with broken hearts, we knew it was time to let him go.
On February 17, 2026, we said goodbye to our best friend after 11½ beautiful years.
Chuck will live in our hearts and minds forever. We can honestly say he was the perfect dog for us. We loved him beyond words — and he loved us right back.
Punkin Butt, we love and miss you so very much.
Love always,
Your Dads 🤍
