We adopted Snickers in June of 2013. When we took him in, he was already a well-established adult cat who had lived a life, but fit himself into our young family like a perfect puzzle piece. He was a constant companion, sharing a bed with us, spending time on the sofa with us, and seeking us out for attention or play. He adapted to his adopted sister, Lorelai, a few years later, whom he welcomed into his space and cared for as if they had known each other forever.
He was always easy-going and attention-seeking. He spent his time asking for pets and generally being around anyone he could. He would repay kindness with a deep, resonant purr and a warm touch. He would get into trouble by getting into house plants and going after his favorite human foods like tuna, cream cheese, and chicken. He could always be found moving around the house, lying in spots of light cast by the sun through the windows, even until his final days.
He lived his life with an easy disposition, not even batting an eye when our sons were born. He could be found sitting on the back of the sofa, looking at the little ones with curiosity and tenderness. In one particular instance of mischievous behavior, he stole a pacifier off the counter and yowled across the house with it for nothing more than the human attention he missed in the early days of newborn fog. He helped with nighttime tuck-ins, making sure they were safely looked over and inspecting the remains of many a meal that decorated the floor for anything that could be snatched up. He calmly took to being picked up and generally manhandled by two very affectionate boys as they grew older. His patience with his young humans seemed to have no bounds.
The loss of Snickers has truly left a hole in our family, our home, and our lives, but we feel so fortunate to have found him and that he found us. We’ll miss you every time you don’t jump into a board game box lid left on the floor or every moment you aren’t settled in your spot on the back of the sofa. We truly couldn’t have asked for a better first pet as a family, and your presence will be missed forever. Rest in peace, Snickers.
