The loss of a beloved pet leaves an emptiness that can be difficult to describe. Their familiar presence, daily routines, and unconditional love become treasured memories.

“While nothing can replace that companionship, creating a meaningful memorial can offer comfort and a beautiful way to celebrate a life shared,” said Dr. Laurie Brush, founder of Heaven at Home Pet Hospice.

“Today, pet cremains can be transformed into extraordinary keepsakes, allowing families to honor their companions in ways as unique as the pets themselves. For many families, these keepsakes become a meaningful part of the grieving process.”

According to research on pet loss by Ben Hughes and Beth Lewis Harkin, published in OMEGA—Journal of Death and Dying, maintaining meaningful emotional connections with a deceased pet through memories and remembrance rituals can provide comfort and help some owners navigate grief.

Psychologists call this “continuing bonds,” referring to the meaningful connections we maintain with loved ones after their death.

Creative Cremains Options

Memorial glass art: Skilled artisans incorporate a small amount of cremains into colorful glass orbs, sculptures, and paperweights. These luminous creations become one-of-a-kind tributes displayed in the home.

Cremains-infused jewelry: Pendants, rings, beads, and other wearable keepsakes allow families to carry a tangible reminder of their beloved companion wherever they go.

Many creations require only a small portion of cremains, making it possible to preserve the remainder or create individual keepsakes for several family members.

Personalized Artwork and Keepsakes

Heaven at Home Practice Manager Kim Hoogerhyde says that while traditional urns remain a cherished choice, she’s seeing an increased trend toward choosing additional memorial options in the form of artwork creations and keepsakes.

“Many of our clients will choose items such as our in-house laser-engraved portraits, fur clippings, or nose and paw prints to capture and reflect their pet’s personality. We also help our clients connect with artisan partners like Jennifer Waters, who makes custom hand-crafted memorial candles at Dogkind Candle Co.”

She notes that a keepsake offers something tangible to hold, see, or touch when memories feel especially poignant. It can inspire storytelling, celebrate happy moments, and help transform the pain of absence into gratitude for a remarkable relationship.

A Tribute as Unique as Your Pet

Choosing a memorial is deeply personal. Perhaps a sparkling glass pendant recalls your dog’s joyful energy, or a peaceful sculpture reflects your cat’s favorite sunny resting place.

When the time comes, explore what feels meaningful to you and your family. Memorialization doesn’t eliminate grief. Instead, it offers a personal way to celebrate a beloved pet’s life and honor a bond that continues beyond loss.
